The first battlecruisers were designed in the United Kingdom, as a development of the armoured cruiser, at the same time as the dreadnought succeeded the pre-dreadnought battleship.
Battlecruisers typically had thinner armour (to a varying degree) and a somewhat lighter main gun battery than contemporary battleships, installed on a longer hull with much higher engine power in order to attain greater speeds. These were similar in displacement, armament and cost to battleships, but differed in form and balance of attributes. The battlecruiser (also written as battle cruiser or battle-cruiser) was a type of capital ship of the first half of the 20th century. Oops, sorry dear.HMS Hood, the largest battlecruiser ever built, in Australia on 17 March 1924 Don't panic, just grab a hold of the nearest crew member. We're going down! Stay with the ship, I'm out.I've lost my hat! Swing around, we'll pick it up.Flying this low, always makes me nervous.Let's hurry up and finish this attack, it's a raid night. This battlecruiser shoots, it destroys, but wait! It does more!.Let's go this way, really really fast! If something gets in our way, shoot it!.
#STARCRAFT BATTLECRUISER FULL#
If the Terran player is able to create a full sky army, the Zerg player will have very few options to fight it head-on, as Point Defense Drones block all Zerg anti-air except for casted spells such as Infested Terran (which do not benefit from upgrades and are nearly useless against +3 armor Battlecruisers), Fungal Growth, Neural Parasite, and Abduct. However, in TvZ, the Zerg player has a large window of time to end the game before a full sky fleet can be created. Transitioning to this composition takes a significant amount of time and resources, which can be done safely in TvT due to the defensive strength and efficiency of Siege Tanks against Terran units. The Battlecruiser is rarely seen in the TvZ matchup because it requires Raven and Viking support to be effective. Yamato Cannon is typically used on the opponent's Battlecruisers or Vikings to preserve air superiority and to prevent kiting. Since they are heavily outranged by Vikings, they must be supported by Vikings (and preferably Ravens as well) to be effective. In longer TvT games, it is common for the player with air dominance to construct Battlecruisers. Because Immortal's Hardened Shield does not work against spell damage, it can be killed with exactly one Yamato Cannon.īattlecruisers will use their more powerful ATS weapon against the Colossus.īattlecruisers are most commonly seen in the mirror matchup. The Colossus and Archon can also be killed with one Yamato if you damage the shields with one EMP.
Spell damage is not reduced by armor, which means Yamato deals precisely enough damage to break the hull. Point Defense Drones from Ravens are effective at blocking Tempest shots due to their slow rate of fire, and can significantly increase the survivability of Battlecruisers in an engagement.Ĭarriers and Tempests can be killed with a single Yamato Cannon shot if you first wipe their shields with two EMPs. If there are Tempests or High Templars on the field, it is important to expend all energy on Yamato Cannons as soon as the engagement begins (preferably aimed at the Tempests, which take two Yamato shots to kill). Since they are considered Massive units, they take bonus damage from Tempests, which can attack the Battlecruisers from afar. Protoss īattlecruisers can occur in the very late game, although they are very rare. The Battlecruiser retains the Yamato Cannon from Brood War.Īllows Battlecruisers to use the Yamato Cannon ability.Ĭompetitive Usage Vs. Players also sometimes pull SCVs to repair Battlecruisers during combat. Despite this, if built when the Terran has a large advantage, it can seal the victory and make a comeback very difficult. However, like in Brood War, the Battlecruiser is rarely used due to its slow speed, high cost and lengthy tech tree. This flying fortress boasts the highest default armour value of any combat unit in the game, which can make it particularly hard to kill. It can deal large amounts of damage and has high health. Similar to its Brood War counterpart, the Battlecruiser is a slow but powerful unit. It can be constructed at a Starport with a Tech Lab add-on once a Fusion Core has been built. The Battlecruiser is the Terran's capital ship.
